I look happy in this photo don't I? I was. Until after this photo. We were out for our traditional lunch at Lynn's Paradise Cafe - just my mom and oldest daughter - which we've done for over five years now on every Louisville visit. I start going here when she (Lynn) was over in my Crescent Hill neighborhood and it's great to see her long-term success in a tough business. It's a Louisville institution now and definitely worth a visit if you pass through. Over the years we've gone with the whole family. We've gone with friends. Brian and I went for a very late lunch early on this trip (one advantage to Lynn's is the broad hours of service). But the most fun is had with my mom and Rachel. We laugh, we chat, we order onion rings, lattes and a strawberry milkshake. We indulge without apology.
And we usually take photos. Rachel took this one. She did a good job. Then she not too gently whacked the open camera lens straight down on the Formica table top. Not good. We've found the camera will still take photos, but the screen is blank until after the shot. I took a whole lot of pics to get yesterday's entry. This is one reason why there's no photo of Rachel in her sweater. I will try again today because I agree it's interesting to see it modeled. Anyway, she didn't do it maliciously, so after a bit of a mom lecture on safe camera handling I let it go and we enjoyed our onion rings.
How does knitting work into this? Well, this is my Sally Melville Touch Me Scarf (made longer). I love it because it's so very soft and silky on bare skin. I wore this with this oh-so-soft cashmere sweater a lot on the trip. I did the same thing in Russia last year - this was my comfort sweater. Do other people do this? I seem to develop favorite outfits while traveling - not always the ones predicted while packing - and use the excuse that I'm traveling to wear them day after day (breaking that high school code of "ewww, can you believe she wore that TWICE this week"). This outfit has been from Vladivostok to Moscow to Mammoth Cave National Park to San Diego - around the world in one year - that's flexible. More on this travel over the weekend - this week is a special anniversary for us. Just to give a hint, here's the scarf at Baby Hospital #3 in Vladivostok on Dec 2, '04:
Anyway, I really recommend this scarf. Yeah, it's easy peasy garter stitch, but it never fails to get compliments and I've had people impulsively reach out to touch it. And it's machine washable and dryable. Works for me.
